The Alexandrine measures approximately 23 inches from tip to tail, making it a small to medium-sized parrot, or a rather large parakeet, which may account for it being called by both names. There are several subspecies of P. eupatria, the main differences between them being slight differences in coloration. Most however are predominantly green or greenish, and have a rather distinctive ring or collar around the neck. The Alexandrine is also called the Alexandrine Ring-Necked Parakeet. These birds have long tails, tails which make up over half of their overall length.

The Alexandrine makes an excellent pet. Its skills at performing tricks and talking are described as good by some, and moderate by others, but like many species of parrots, a bird’s skills will often depend a great deal on the time its owner is willing to work with it. Some parrots that will talk their heads off without the need for a great deal of coaching, while others are definitely the silent type.
